Many Nigerians Are Bracing Up For February 4

Nigerians are bracing up for February 4, and the reason for this would not be far-fetch for those who have been following news of happenings in the country.

They are aware of the saying that when two elephants fight, the grass usually suffers, but much more, the monies they pay to use telecommunications services is expected to be jerked up again.

The bone of contention is this 50 per cent telecommunication tariffs hike, which has been on the table for some time now.

Whereas the telecoms companies cite high operational costs as reason for proposed tariffs hike, the consumers feel they are saddled with as much financial burden to bear more.

Many organisations and association, like the Non-Academic Staff Union of Educational and Related Institutions (NASU); the Lagos Chamber of Commerce and Industry (LCCI) , and the Human Rights Writers Association of Nigeria (HURIWA) amongst others are backing the protest, reinforcing the caution on the masses not to be caught unawares

The Socio-Economic Rights and Accountability Project, SERAP, is already challenging the government’s decision to approve an increase in telecommunications tariff by 50 per cent, and the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) as at yesterday, had put its affiliate unions on the alert, saying they would commence a nationwide mass protest against the planned tariffs hike.

Also, the LCCI backing the NLC opinion says the hike would place additional burdens on the masses of the country, while putting more money in the pocket of the telecoms companies.

Thus, Nigerians are bracing up for February 4, unwilling to be caught unawares, even as the NLC ready its protest arsenals.

According to the NLC, speaking through its General Secretary, Emma Ugboaja, stated:

“In response to a resolution of the meeting of the National Administrative Council, NAC, to resist the proposed 50 per cent hike in the tariff of telecommunication services and all other forms of policies that afflict Nigerian workers and masses, all state councils of NLC are directed to begin immediate mobilisation of members of their councils in their respective states for a one-day peaceful protest rally.

“The rally shall take place in various state capitals and FCT on February 4, 2025, by 7a.m. You are expected to co-ordinate all affiliates in your states and work with volunteering civil society partners resident in your state for effective rally.

“The rally procession should lead to any NCC office in the state, where not available, to the state House of Assembly where our petition will be presented. Further developments shall be made available.

“At this time of massive hardship, your unwavering support and determination is critical to defending ourselves and nation from policies that emasculate us for the benefit of corporate fat cats.”
