FG Gives Update On Plans To Extradite Simon Ekpa To Nigeria

The Federal Government has provided updates on the efforts to extradite Simon Ekpa back to the country.

Ekpa, a pro Biafra agitator had been in the custody of the authorities of Finland, after they arrested him on November, 21.

The Chief of Defence Staff (CDS), Christopher Musa, who provided the update, said the federal government has submitted most of the requirements for Simon Ekpa’s extradition to Nigeria.

Musa spoke on Channels Television’s 2024 year-end review programme on Tuesday.

“Well, I’m sure he is cooling off somewhere. Legal action is going to be taken accordingly. I don’t want to say much about that, but I’m happy he has been arrested,” he said.

A district court in Päijät-Häme later sent the Finland-based Ekpa to prison for “spreading terrorist propaganda on social media”.

Simon Ekpa leads a faction of Indigenous People of Biafra, (IPOB), founded by Nnamdi Kanu still held in prison in Nigeria.

The group is agitating for the validation of a Republic of Biafra, a mantra Ekpa had been trying to keep alive overseas.

His approach however does not seem to align with those of the mainstream IPOB hence the members of the former see him as an opportunist, and dissociate themselves from him.

This is moreso because came to more reckoning upon the arrest and detention of Kanu.

The Eagle also reports that Simon Ekpa was arrested along with four others last November, for alleged terror-related activities, including incitement to violence and terrorism financing in Nigeria

The arrest, welcome in many quarters in Nigeria is coming eight months after he was declared wanted

It has thus put a lie to the assertion that Ekpa had become an important personality in Finland, and that the authorities there were positively disposed to his crusades against Nigeria.

However, reacting to the arrest, Defence authorities described it as a right step in the direction of enhancing Nigeria-Finland bilateral relationships.
