Fenerbahce To Vote on Super Lig Withdrawal Amid Players Attack

Members of Fenerbahce will cast their votes this week to determine whether the team would carry out its threat to quit from the Super Lig in Turkey.

According to ESPN, club members will decide whether to leave the league by casting a vote at an emergency general assembly on Tuesday, April 2. After players were attacked by Trabzonspor fans who stormed the field at the end of a game last month, Fenerbahce first raised the topic of leaving the game completely.

The Trabzonspor supporters engaged in combat with the security guards as they approached the pitch of play, leaving the Fenerbahce players terrified for their life. Video footage showed some Trabzonspor players trying to guide the Fener squad towards the relative safety of the tunnel while also trying to hold off the enraged crowd as they fled the ground, chased by furious home fans.

This season, Turkish football has already seen a lot of alarming events, one of which being an astonishing attack on a referee by a club president. Fenerbahce, one of the league’s most illustrious teams, would suffer greatly from its exclusion from the Super Liga.

The vote will have a significant outcome. In the unlikely event that Fenerbahce is kicked out of the Super Lig, they may submit an application to join a new domestic league in one of their nearby nations, such as Greece, Bulgaria, or Romania. There are already expatriate teams playing overseas for a variety of reasons, but this is the most well-known instance. Fenerbahce members also have the option to vote to stay, but the process of reaching this far should at least encourage reform in Turkish football and how it handles staff and supporter behaviour.
