Ex-Leeds Manager Allardyce Would Replace Pochettino at Chelsea ‘Tomorrow’

Ex-England and Leeds manager, Sam Allardyce has joked that he would take charge of Chelsea “tomorrow” if approached and pointed out the Blues’ main area of weakness.

Since leaving Leeds following the team’s Premier League relegation last May, the former England manager has been without a job. Allardyce has since quipped that, should the opportunity arise, he would gladly take Mauricio Pochettino’s place at Chelsea since, in his opinion, the Argentine is neglecting to fix the team’s most obvious flaw.

Speaking on talkSPORT, Allardyce was asked if he would be willing to take over as Chelsea boss, to which he jokingly replied: “Oh yes, I’d fly back from Dubai tomorrow for that – get me there!”

He then added on where the Blues have been going wrong this season: “Sort the defence out. It’s the worst defending I’ve seen in the Premier League for a long, long time. People see that as a negative punt. There’s a big thing on Monday Night Football about Manchester United and how many shots they’ve conceded and then looking at the top teams like Liverpool, Manchester City and Arsenal. They have the best defensive records. It’s a simple mathematical equation. You win the league if you have the best defence not the best attack.

“The best attack gives you the opportunity to get the points in the end but the defensive side of it wins you the league. The defending has been ignored for many years now and I’ve never seen such bad defending for a long time.”

Pochettino, the former coach of Tottenham, has had difficulty since rejoining Chelsea in the Premier League. The Blues, who are presently 11th in the Premier League, lost the Carabao Cup final on Sunday 1-0 against a weaker Liverpool team. The West London team’s primary vulnerability, as Allardyce said, has been their defence, which has allowed 41 goals in 25 league games.

The Argentine manager’s future at Stamford Bridge has been the subject of much conjecture. According to certain sources, the 51-year-old manager’s contract may be terminated one year early if the Blues are unable to earn a European position.

He is still focused on getting his team to the FA Cup quarterfinals, where they will play Leeds on Wednesday.
