Ten Students Waylay, Assault Teacher Who Stopped Them Cheating In An Exam

Ten students of a secondary school have waylaid and assaulted their teacher because he dared to stop them from cheating in an exam.

The ten students are of the Isanbi Comprehensive High School, Ilisan-Remo, Ikenne Local Government Area of ogun state, and last Tuesday, beat up their victim, a teacher identified as, Kolawole Shonuga.

Teacher Shonuga was invigilating aunified examination for the SS 1 Art class students and got attacked because he tried to uphold the rules of the exercise by preventing the students from cheating in an examination.

He caught one 18 year old student identified as Ashimi Adebanjo, cheating and seized his paper, but the culprit did not take it lightly.

Adebanjo mobilised other students after school hours with whom he waylaid the teacher at the school gate where they dealt with him, reports in Daily Trust said.

One of them, Kazeem Adelaja allegedly hit a stick on Shonuga’s head while others were beating him, before the police could reach the scene.

Cops from the Remo Division later arrived the scene arresting ten of the students.

Confirming the attack and eventual arrest of the culprits, police spokesman, Omotola Odutola, said Shonuga had made a formal report on the alleged assault at Remo Police Division.

Odutola also confirmed the arrest of ten suspects, and they had been arraigned in court for assault.

The report also cites the State Chairman of the Academic Staff Union of Secondary Schools (ASUSS), Felix Agbesanwa as frowning at the incident.

“The incident is true and I have been briefed. Our stand is that any student who raises his hand against his teacher should face the wrath of the law. There is no going back on that. No student must raise their hands against the teacher, whether Ogun Teach teachers or permanent teachers, a teacher is a teacher.

“They must be made to face the law to serve as a deterrent. I learnt they have been charged to court already”, he reportedly said.

Similarly, the Special Adviser to the Governor on Education, Science and Technology, Prof. Abayomi Arigbabu while warning against cheating in an exam as well as other acts of indiscipline amongst students, said the state government, as a way of checkmating such, had introduced the signing of undertaking by students, their parents and heads of schools.

“I’m using this opportunity to advise parents to talk to their children, they should warn them, because we won’t tolerate any indiscipline from any child. Any student that misbehaves in school will be dealt with appropriately,” he said.
