IWD – Women Will Continue To Be Marginalised Until …

IWD – Women will continue to be marginalised in Nigeria and elsewhere except certain steps are taken deliberately by concerned parties.

This is the submission of the Justice Dupe Atoki, Deputy President, ECOWAS Court of Justice.

Speaking against the background of the International Women’s Day, she said women needed to be trained to bridge the technological gap that has thus far accounted for their marginalisation.

Education empowerment of women, she said, holds the key to women not remaining marginalized. “You need to be educated to be able to use technology to be able to use the digital process.

“So today is a day in which we recognise again, the vulnerability of women and what we can do ourselves to help ourselves in educating women in supporting women in encouraging governments to set up educational systems,” she said.

the emergence of technology, innovation and education in the digital age has become an incentive towards achieving gender equality and empowerment of the female gender.

“The use of technology can increase access to quality education for women by providing online educational resources and tools”, he said, adding that more education for women meant opportunities to build successful businesses and engage in meaningful economic, political and social discourse.

“The information technology sector in the country is still dominated by men with a few women participating in the sector.

It needs to be emphasised that increasing women participation in the technology sector is one of the surest ways of taking women out of economic disempowerment and strike the right balance between men and women in the technology sector for income equality,” Ojukwu said.

The Eagle reports that the International Women’s Day (IWD) is celebrated on March 8 every year, to acknowledge the important place or women in society as well as look at some of the challenges confronting them.

At the United Nations (UN), the celebration this year us under the theme is “DigitALL: Innovation and technology for gender equality”.
