Demolition Of Properties – It was in the news that the Lagos Metropolitan Area Transport Authority (LAMATA) last Monday started the demolition of houses.

A report in the Nation newspaper, stated that over 180 landlords were last week paid by the Lagos state government.

Most landlords living in this area of Ogun state are not emotionally and psychologically prepared for this development, and when the LAMATA operatives arrived on Monday, a lot of them were yet to pack their belongings.

Some claimed they have channel the monies with them into their businesses, including paying children’s school fees.

A storey building is still standing tall amidst the demolition. I gathered from reliable source that the landlord refused to collect the money offered by the government in order for her to vacate the premises.

As expected of her she ought to have removed the iron sheet roof. For the rest that their property had been demolished, they still find it difficult to comprehend the fact that those houses are no more there.

We could see them running here and there to pack iron rods, broken blocks, roofing sheets, which are remnant from their property.

Despite the fact the government claimed to have paid the landlords off, some of them are emotionally battered, because the money would not be enough to build new houses.

One hopes that in the long run, this development would turn out better and enjoyable.

The Eagle reports that last August, the  Lagos State Government said it had commenced payment of compensation to about 800 people comprising tenants and property owners affected by the Lagos Rail Mass Transit (LRMT) Red line project in Ogun State

It said that the compensation process was carried out jointly by officials of the Land Bureau of the Ogun State Government and consultant to LAMATA, Messrs. Global Impact and Environmental Service witnessed by officials of LAMATA.
