‘We Are In Dismay Over The State Of Things In Nigeria’

Some Nigerians have expressed dismay over the increasing cost of living in the country, urging the government to do something.

They made their concerns known while speaking in an interview with The Eagle correspondent in Lagos.

For example, a  Cosmetologist, Esther Ughoro while speaking to our correspondent mentioned sardine, transplantation, and water as three basics which prices have increased in the recent.

She expressed dismay that Sardine which she used to buy at N300, was now being sold at N400, saying the N150 increase within a short time was too much.

Bemoaning a similar increase in transportation, she said: “The drivers are complaining that expenses have increased, so they have to put it on someone else, we the final consumer are the ones they are putting it on sadly.

“Water we used to buy for N100-N150 is now N200 flat, irrespective of where yo are buying it from. It is just so sad because the income hasn’t increased as such but the cost of living has increased and it sad.”

Another respondent who expressed dismay with the state of things in the country was Ayomide Akinbode, a consumer.

She cited sachet water, wondering while it should be selling for N20 in the state, saying this was only possible because of greed.

“ Sellers buy a bag of pure water for N200 and sell per one sachet for N20, having a total gain of N400 for a bag.

“ I can remember when a bag of water increased by N200 in 2013, a sachet was sold for N10”, she said.

Also sharing his view, a member of the The Nigerian Institute of Journalism Students’ Union, Adedapo Adesanya bemoaned the high rate of unemployment in the country,saying it has worsened the challenges Nigerians face in terms of price increases.

Adedapo, advised the government to overhaul its macroeconomic policies, adding that there was need for the government to increase the  incomes of workers and also support those in the agriculture sector.

“We are still working with the same income that we are making last year and prices have gone up, imagine someone earning thirty thousand Naira while the food he was buying at the rate of 5000 Naira has  doubled in price.”

He further encourages good infrastructures, electricity, and better roads for the country.

An Entrepreneur, Bella chucks in an online interview with our correspondent, appraised Nigeria’s image, as the largest in Africa and blessed, as the 27th largest economy in the world, saying things ought to be better in the country.

Chucks further stated that; “For years our economic system has been a disgrace nothing to write home about. Even now it’s worse case because our money has no value. The Naira is as good as unless outside Nigeria”

According to him, it was truly sad that Nigeria was running an economy which was not benefiting its citizens.

An Entrepreneur and Strategic Communicator, Gbenro Oluwatobi Samuel while express disappointment with the trend of things in the economy,  the famed giant of Africa, urged the authorities to do something to correct the challenge.

Gbenro said the deteriorating economy was due to the greed and incompetence of the national leaders.

“Our leaders should prioritize the interest/welfare of the people over every other thing. And the people should live each day of their lives expressing love for the nation and to fellow humans”, Gbenro said.
